Tramell Jones Jr. made his first career start in the toughest place Florida has played all season, and the Gators beat No. 7 Texas **27-24** in Austin on Saturday. Florida scored 24 straight points after falling behind 17-3, then held on after Texas pulled within three in the final five minutes.

**Final: Florida 27, No. 7 Texas 24** (as of 3:23 PM ET, per ESPN). Every snap is on our [play-by-play](https://www.gatorstandard.com/live-florida-at-texas-play-by-play/) page, and more coverage is on the [Game Day hub](https://www.gatorstandard.com/game-day/).

Kanye Clark's fumble recovery at the Texas 39 with 1:58 left set up the finish. Texas called timeouts after Jadan Baugh ran for 2 yards and then 1 yard. On third-and-7, Jones kept it for 9 yards to the Texas 27 and a first down, and Texas used its last timeout. From there, Florida knelt three times to run out the clock.

It's the signature win of Jon Sumrall's first season. Florida improves to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the SEC, and it won without its starting quarterback: Aaron Philo was held out with a shoulder injury and available only as an emergency option.

### Jones delivers in his first start

Jones, a sophomore, got the start with Philo out. He threw both of Florida's touchdown passes to tight end Lacota Dippre: a 7-yard score with 18 seconds left in the first half that cut Texas' lead to 17-10, and an 8-yard score in the third quarter that tied it 17-17.

Per ESPN, Jones finished 22 of 35 for 155 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran 10 times for 41 yards, including the 9-yard keeper that clinched it. Florida didn't turn the ball over.

### From 17-3 down

Texas built a 17-3 lead in the second quarter. Raleek Brown's 32-yard touchdown run and a 38-yard Gianni Spetic field goal came in the first quarter, and a 63-yard punt return touchdown made it 17-3\. Then Florida's defense took over. On fourth-and-1 late in the second quarter, Ty Jackson stopped Texas for a 1-yard loss near midfield, and Jones hit Dippre for the touchdown before halftime.

Florida opened the third quarter with a 15-play, 69-yard drive that took 8:03 off the clock and ended with Jones' second touchdown pass to Dippre. Receiver Bailey Stockton went down with a lower-leg injury on that drive, and he came back. Charlie Jones of WRUF [reported](https://x.com/CharJonesMedia/status/2111526039923147173?ref=gatorstandard.com) his return heading into the fourth quarter, calling it "unreal grit and determination." Stockton finished with four catches for 31 yards.

### The fourth quarter

Patrick Durkin's 28-yard field goal with 10:40 left gave Florida its first lead, 20-17\. It capped a 14-play, 57-yard drive that took 6:31\. On Texas' next possession, Brendan Bett stopped Arch Manning for a 3-yard loss on fourth-and-2, and Florida took over at the Texas 45.

That drive brought a scare. Baugh went down after a 13-yard run, [per Zach Abolverdi](https://x.com/ZachAbolverdi/status/2111530658296201312?ref=gatorstandard.com) of Gators Online. He missed only three snaps and finished the drive with an 11-yard touchdown run, and Florida led 27-17 with 6:22 left. Baugh finished with 25 carries for 91 yards and the touchdown.

Texas answered. Manning converted a fourth-and-6 with a 62-yard completion to Emmett Mosley V and hit Cam Coleman for a 9-yard touchdown with 4:21 left, making it 27-24\. Florida went three-and-out. Then Myles Graham sacked Manning and forced a fumble, and Clark recovered at the Texas 39.

### By the numbers

- **Manning:** 14 of 20, 173 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, plus a lost fumble. Florida sacked him five times, per ESPN's game data, and Justin David Kish [noted](https://x.com/JustinDavidKish/status/2111537213380899116?ref=gatorstandard.com) the five sacks as well.
- **Total yards:** Florida 313, Texas 272\. Florida ran for 158 yards on 46 carries.
- **Possession:** Florida 38:11, Texas 21:49\. Florida was 8 of 19 on third down and 2 of 2 on fourth down.
- **Turnovers:** Florida 0, Texas 1.

### What it means

Florida came to Austin off a 38-19 home loss to South Carolina, and it won here without its starting quarterback. A road win over a top-10 team is the kind of result that defines a first-year coach. With an open week before Georgia on Oct. 31, Sumrall's Gators get two weeks to enjoy it.
