Can Sumrall's defense answer the critics at No. 7 Texas?
Fans are frustrated with the Gators defense ahead of Saturday in Austin.

Florida's defense is taking heat from its own fan base heading into Saturday's trip to No. 7 Texas.
Gators commentator Bud Davis put it bluntly on X Wednesday: "Florida's 2026 defense is Grantham/Toney/Armstrong levels-of-bad." He added: "Pretty inexcusable w/ the coaching experience we have on that side of the ball between White, Sumrall, and Gasparato." The post drew more than 10,000 views.
Davis was referring to defensive staffs under former coordinators Todd Grantham, Patrick Toney and Austin Armstrong, and to Florida's current staff, which includes Brad White and Greg Gasparato along with head coach Jon Sumrall.
The next test
Florida (4-2, 2-2 SEC) plays No. 7 Texas (4-1, 1-1 SEC) Saturday at noon ET at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, on ABC. The Gators won last season's meeting 29-21 in Gainesville. A strong showing against a top-10 opponent on the road would be the most direct answer to the criticism.
