Two weeks after back-to-back blowout losses, Jon Sumrall walked off the field in Austin with the biggest win of his first season at Florida. The Gators rallied from 17-3 down to beat No. 7 Texas 27-24 on Saturday behind backup quarterback Tramell Jones Jr., making his first career start, and a defense that sacked Arch Manning five times. (As of 5:04 PM ET.)

Afterward, Sumrall made one thing clear: he didn't want the win pinned on any one player.

### 'A team win'

"Our defense played a helluva lot better," Sumrall said at his postgame press conference, per [Edgar Thompson of the Orlando Sentinel](https://x.com/osgators/status/2111544183341322647?ref=gatorstandard.com). "I'm not taking anything away from Tramell, but today was a team win, not a quarterback win."

"Our guys fought today," Sumrall said, [per Thompson](https://x.com/osgators/status/2111542547302727692?ref=gatorstandard.com). "We showed a lot of character, a lot of growth."

The numbers back him up. Florida held Texas to 272 total yards, forced the game-sealing fumble when Myles Graham sacked Manning and Kanye Clark recovered with 1:58 left, and kept the ball for 38:11, per ESPN's game data.

### On ABC: 'We kept fighting'

Sumrall was blunt about the start in his on-field interview with ABC, as reported by Charlie Jones, a UF student journalist with the Gators Sports Network on WRUF, in his [game story](https://www.wruf.com/headlines/2026/10/17/texas-sized-upset-gators-shock-no-7-longhorns/?ref=gatorstandard.com).

"We played about as awful as we could in the first quarter, and we kept fighting. We didn't do that the past couple of weeks," Sumrall told ABC. "When things got tough, we flinched the last couple weeks."

"Our team grew today — without the win — because we fought."

### On Tramell Jones Jr.

Jones finished 22 of 35 for 155 yards and two touchdowns to Lacota Dippre, with no interceptions, and ran for 41 yards, including the 9-yard keeper on third-and-7 that clinched it. Sumrall's review was honest, per [WRUF's Charlie Jones](https://www.wruf.com/headlines/2026/10/17/texas-sized-upset-gators-shock-no-7-longhorns/?ref=gatorstandard.com):

"Well, it wasn't perfect. He knows that," Sumrall said of Jones. "He missed some things, but he battled. I love both our quarterbacks. The way they've handled themselves through external people maybe wanting to create controversy or BS."

### Injury notes

Sumrall said receiver Vernell Brown III had been "trying like crazy to give it a go" but didn't feel he looked "right" in warmups, [per Thompson](https://x.com/osgators/status/2111546385476825448?ref=gatorstandard.com). He also gave an update on quarterback Aaron Philo; we have that in a [separate story](https://www.gatorstandard.com/sumrall-philo-injury-couple-week-bye/).

Florida (5-2, 3-2 SEC) has an open week before facing Georgia on Oct. 31 in Atlanta.
