Florida had just knocked off No. 7 Texas 27-24 on the road with a backup quarterback making his first career start. Jon Sumrall still wasn't ready to call the Gators a finished product. (As of 5:14 PM ET.)
On what the win means for the program, Sumrall said, "We have to figure out how to suck less each week. We're not a complete team yet," per Zach Abolverdi of Gators Online, who posted the clip and the full press conference.
Why he said it
Florida came to Austin off a 38-19 homecoming loss to South Carolina, and it started Saturday the same way. Texas led 10-0 after one quarter and 17-3 in the second after a 63-yard punt return touchdown. Then the Gators scored 24 straight points: two Tramell Jones Jr. touchdown passes to Lacota Dippre, a Patrick Durkin field goal and an 11-yard Jadan Baugh touchdown run. Myles Graham's strip-sack, recovered by Kanye Clark with 1:58 left, sealed it.
Sumrall also credited his defense and the whole roster in the press conference. "I'm not taking anything away from Tramell, but today was a team win, not a quarterback win," he said, per Edgar Thompson of the Orlando Sentinel. We have more of his comments, including what he told ABC, in our first Sumrall postgame story, and what he said about Jones on our Jones page.
Florida (5-2, 3-2 SEC) has a bye next week before facing Georgia on Oct. 31 in Atlanta.
